We might not appreciate Aamir Khan and his cinema in the present era as much as we should, but come a decade or two and the next generation will get to know what exactly spectacular has Aamir achieved during his career.
He is known as the perfectionist Khan and this article is not about boasting his perfection skills. We are here to discuss the game changers that he has produced, made and acted in. What is more important is the fact that each film that we tout to be a game changer of his has been made in a unique genre. Amazing!
We list down the films that this generation and the coming ones will cheer Aamir for:
1.Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar
An amazing coming of age sports drama. While most other contemporaries were busy experimenting (or the lack of it) in action genre – Sunil Shetty, Sunny Deol, Ajay Devgan and Akshay Kumar to name a few, Aamir had something else in his mind. This incepts the entire evolution of “different” that everyone looks for but only a chosen few are able to achieve.
2.Andaz Apna Apna
“Hilna Nahin, Hilna Nahin, Varna Hila Kay Rakh Dunga”
This film stands out for reasons different than traditional ones. It bombed on box office as the audience wasn’t actually interested in, well, a comedy. As was the case with our #1, even this film didn’t belong to the action genre. The cult following that it has garnered since its release, though, is mind boggling.
3.Dil Chahta Hai
Who has not watched it at least a 100 times? Who doesn’t love Dil Chahta Hai? Does this film not define what a Hindi film should consist of? No better cinema has been made on the subject of Friendship. Not only a cinematically brilliant product, this film cemented a number of talents in the Hindi Film Industry. Shankar Ehsan Loy were a name to reckon with. Saif Ali Khan kind of found his grove and Dimple Kapadaia revived. Not to mention the warm welcome that Farhan Akhtar received post Dil Chahta Hai still makes noises.
An exceptionally difficult film to make, Lagaan is still remembered as an all-time Indian classic. Being a period drama and the scope it required for it to be sent to production, several production houses let it slip, unless Aamir came to the rescue and became the producer. Rest, as they say, is history. The film with a pretty complex plot revolves in a way that the curiosity (despite knowing the final outcome) remains intact. Such a masterpiece!
5.Rang De Basanti
This film challenges everything! The scope of film making, the overly clichéd patriotic theme, the non-linear, parallel storytelling and the coming of age genre – all basked in the glory of college friendship at the backdrop. RDB is an exception on how to make a patriotic film work. Everything related to this is a piece of gold.
6.Taare Zameen Par
Whenever Indian cinema will be questioned for not being able to bring enough films for children, TZP will show its face with élan. Seldom does a film so beautifully moving and emotionally engaging comes to the foray and works wonders. TZP is one such exception. Much credit goes to the creative director Amol Gupte but what Aamir did as the director is pretty challenging for any actor to achieve. A tear jerker in every which way – TZP is one gamechanger this industry has ever witnessed.
A surprise entry for some but try to recollect the times this film got released. Which was the first mega blockbuster that was a remake of a south Indian action masala flick and re-created a genre of action in Hindi Cinema? Ghajini began it all. It led way to Wanted which in turn kind of made Salman’s career resurrect (he was ever struggling since Tere Naam with Partner as a minor exception)! Not a great written and edited film but again, a game changer at that. Aamir in fact brought 8 pack abs to the 70mm before anyone else. Okay, not before Shekhar Suman but then we are talking about mainstream actors. And the hairdo! Boy, did I not see similar requests at hair salons by the fans!
One gem of a film which actually tries to portray what change our education system needs after all. Some of the cast members are being picked from RDB and add Boman Irani to it and you get a marvel. The plot and the speed at which this film runs give you no time to look away. Forget about the fact that it is such a blockbuster, watch the film for the scene where Aamir is trying to save Sharman’s father by riding the scooter in front of the ambulance. All natural, no acting, genius!
Surprised to see this entrée in this list? Don’t! Again, a game changer when it comes to bringing adult cinema to mass audiences and making them love it. Aamir is again at helm of production and has an additional job of resurrecting his nephew’s career. This time, he brings to us Delhi Belly. The sub plots and the relatable gags make you believe that Delhi can be different from what is showed on screen – and real too!
There was an added “Disco Fighter” character played by Aamir himself in the climax and it was rumoured that a stand alone film will also be made. Nothing has materialized though!
Not a film, but a maverick in Indian TV. Talk about bringing a change to society and you will start to relate with Satyamev Jayate. It doesn’t blame people by washing dirty linen in public. It tries to find a solution and bring a change in us, which still remains to be its USP.
We sincerely hope that his upcoming Dangal only gets added to the list and Aamir keeps making sensational cinema in his coming years as well.
