Acting is a tough job. More often than not, the actors have to go an extra mile in order to get the essence of their character right. However, there are times when the actors go way too far in order to do justice to their roles. Here are some of the hardworking actors who did just this –
1. Heath Ledger as the Joker
Heath Ledger became a cult hero for his awesome portrayal of the Joker in 2008 classic, Batman: The Dark Knight. His portrayal went on to become the very definition of Joker in the movies. For his role, it is said that he locked himself in a hotel room for 1 month, without any contact with the outside world. He watched tapes of some of the worst criminals in order to get into the psychology of the character. The end result was perfect. The only sad part about it is that he passed away shortly after the movie was released. He won an Oscar for his role.
2. Jared Leto as the Joker
The Joker it seems is a character that needs a lot of preparation and delving into negative psychology. Jared Leto did pretty much what Heath Ledger did for his role in the recently released movie Suicide Squad. He went a step further and sent dead rats to the producers and his co-stars to nail the unhinged personality of his character.
3. Christian Bale in the Machinist
Christian bale lost about 60 kg of weight for his role in the 2009 film the Machinist. His weight loss was so drastic and sudden that he looked like a starved corpse instead of the healthy and muscular we had come to associate him with.
4. Tom Hanks in Castaway
Tom hanks played a marooned sailor in the 90s hit movie Castaway. For his role, Tom Hanks lost 30 kg of weight and grew such a huge beard that his face became almost inscrutable. Credit where it is due, he nailed his part and even got an Oscar nomination for it.
5. Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol
Everyone knows that Tom Cruise loves to do his own stunts. However, he took it way too far when he decided to do the insane rappelling scene at the top of the Burj Khalifa all by himself. No amount of dissuasion worked on him and ultimately he did it all by himself. The scene was a highlight of the movie and he drew many plaudits for this move.
