Life comes with a bag full of responsibilities. Education, career, health, bills, maintenance and you name it. With the growing level of burdens in life, you can’t do without loved ones who have your back. As the hurdles keep getting more and more challenging, how can you still manage to have fulfilling relationships? The only thing you can do to keep someone you love in your life is to BE THERE FOR THEM.
You don’t need to make big gestures or buy expensive gifts or use fancy language, you simply need to be there for them in a time of need even if you don’t have anything useful to say. Your presence is valuable enough to your closed ones.
Be there for your sister’s baby shower. Be there for your father’s hospital visit. Be there for your friend’s art exhibition. Pick up an old college roommate personally at the airport instead of sending a cab for her. Celebrate the little joys and the huge milestones of their life. But also hold their hand if they’re going through a terrible divorce or they’ve lost a family member. Just be there.
It might be really hard on you to attend your aunt’s birthday party when you’ve had a crappy day at work. You might want to skip your friend’s engagement when you’ve been doing extra shifts at your workplace for the past week. But this is what matters most in life.
Showing up for little moments like these will help the bonds become stronger. It will really mean a lot to your people if you are present with them to cheer them on or mourn with them in their bad times. Because life is but a series of events and when you’re going through a tough time, you will want someone to be there for you too.
Another thing about maintaining relationships is that you would be surprised to know the one who are actually there for you. Often, there are people you want to help and support, but they are never there for you when you need them. These are the people who will let you down and the resentment will eventually break the relationship. The secret to having enriching relationships is helping yourself weed out these people who will obviously let you down in the future.
Focus more on the ones who are ready to make time for you, and do the same for them. Don’t waste your precious energy on people you are getting nothing in return from.
Make sure you are building healthy and pleasurable bonds with your family, loved ones and friends. Life is a long journey and you can’t spend it alone.
