As per data, India has the second largest English speaking population in the world. However, for most of the people here in India, English is a second language. So, like with any other second language, errors do creep in from time to time. Here are some of the common English mistakes that Indians make –
1. COPE UP
Cope with becomes cope up. A common mistake that even people who have English as their first language make.
2. MANY A TIMES
Many times or many a time becomes many a times. The ‘a’ somehow manages to creep in before a plural.
3. YOU NEED NOT TO
You don’t need to or you need not become you need not to. How in the world this happened, please don’t ask us as we ourselves don’t know.
Anyway becomes anyways. How does the ‘s’ manages to attach itself to the end of anyway?
5. REVERT BACK
Revert or reply become revert back or reply back respectively. Reply and revert already imply the back people. No need to add another back.
6. A LOT MANY
Many and a lot become lot many and a lot many respectively. Why so many ‘many’? It is still a mystery folks.
Discussing becomes discussing about. Well, when you say discussing, it is implied that you are discussing about something. Why add the ‘about’ and waste precious seconds?
Called becomes called as. Once again, if you say called, it is implied that the person or thing you referring about is called as this or that. No need to add the ‘as’.
9. DISPOSE OFF
Dispose of becomes dispose off. Okay, this might be a genuine mistake as of and off do sound similar. However, keep in mind that the of you use has one f only.
